Seeing monkeys around supermarkets is common. To help people handle these situations, Monkey Guarding Borneo has made posters with key tips to prevent monkeys from taking food from shopping carts or people’s hands.
The main tip is to keep food hidden, which can be done by putting groceries in closed bags or covering shopping carts with cloths. Avoid eating or carrying food openly in areas where monkeys are often seen.
When monkeys don’t see food, they’re less likely to come close. So, when putting groceries in your car, make sure no monkeys are around, and wait until they’re out of sight before loading up.
It’s also best to eat inside the shopping mall or in your car rather than in open areas. Feeding monkeys is discouraged, as it leads to more monkey-human interactions.
Finally, help keep the area clean by putting waste in closed bins and not leaving food outside vehicles. Following these simple steps keeps both people and monkeys safe! We also conduct presentations in shopping malls and organise workshops for supermarket staff. For more information please send us an email: monkeyguarding@gmail.com
